Student days
I studied for both my BSc and PhD degrees in the Department of Physics in the University of Birmingham. In those days both degrees took three years, and thus it was normal to have finished the PhD by age 24.
My PhD supervisor was Alastair Rae. His own research work involved both x-ray crystallography and lattice energy calculations, and he had developed an interest in phase transitions. My PhD research concerned the phase transitions in the molecular crystal of malononitrile, CH2(CN)2.
The research group was called Crystal Physics, led by the famous crystallographer Arthur Wilson. It was at the tail end of the use of film methods for recording diffraction patterns rather than the modern methods using x-ray detectors (using the Weissenberg method).
Post-doctoral research
My first post-doctoral position (three years) was working with Prof Stuart Pawley in the Department of Physics at the University of Edinburgh.
